BIG BASH INDOOR CRICKET LEAGUE

Hit & Run Win Inaugural

Big Bash Indoor League

2017

Big Bash Indoor League burst onto Sheffield’s winter calendar in November 2017, transforming dark, wet Fridays into evenings of high‑energy indoor cricket, teamwork and quiet goodwill as volunteers put out chairs and swept the floor of the newly renovated YMA Sports Hall. Five teams fought through 13 high‑octane wind‑ball matches before outsiders Hit & Run stole the trophy off unbeaten favourites Molvi Sixers—one wicket, one ball to spare. Alongside the drama came profits for a Tanzanian orphanage and dozens of new friendships, leaving everyone eager for whatever comes next.

Molvi Sixers: Perfect Until the Final

  • Four league wins out of four, a crisp semi‑final, and then heartbreak: Hit & Run chased 68 with a ball to spare, opener Mazar Sharif anchoring 28* (37) while wickets tumbled around him—following in the footsteps of his role model Younis Khan, his robust wrist‑work, temperament and calmness on full display.

A Stage for Young Guns

  • Teen‑led Jattaas Six averaged just 17 years old, yet they went after the league’s senior attacks with abandon. Sixteen‑year‑old Murtaza Ali peppered the walls with fours and sixes on his way to a sparkling 31* against the seasoned Molvi Sixers, drawing gasps from both benches.

Six Shotterz’ Silent Assassin

  • Hamzah Younis retired four matches in a row (27*, 27*, 25*, 25*), piling up 109 runs at 54.5 alongside five tidy wickets—enough to lift the Player of the Series trophy, even though Six Shotterz missed out on the league title.

Rules Tweaks That Worked

  • No LBW – fewer arguments, faster games.
  • One‑hand‑off‑the‑wall catches – spectacular, skill‑building, crowd‑pleasing.
  • Retire at 25 – every player bats, totals stay attainable, comebacks happen.
  • Same wind‑ball all league – shine fades, spinners enter, every week feels different.

Windball Magic

Brand‑new windballs swung like a white Kookaburra; three weeks later it was gripping and ripping. Captains learnt to manage the life‑cycle of a single ball, adding tactical depth unseen in most indoor comps.

Friday Night Vibes

YMA Sports Hall—nets on the ceiling and all—buzzed every Friday night with friendly chatter and the unmistakable smack of wind‑ball on wall. A single Canon camera tried to keep up, filming in short bursts between battery swaps; those raw clips later landed on YouTube in bite‑sized parts, letting players replay their boundaries and run‑outs at home. Spectators crowded both entry‑way doors, scrambling for the few chairs and craning round teammates to catch each delivery.

With entry set at a modest £3 per player, every spare penny left after hall hire and equipment costs went straight to a Tanzanian orphanage—quiet generosity that turned every ball bowled into meaningful support for a good cause.

The Organisers

Basharat Ali (better known as Bash) drew on years of business admin and club cricket to bring the outdoors indoors. The name “Big Bash...” was lifted from Australia’s fast‑paced BBL T20 competition and, by happy coincidence, echoed his own nickname. Composed yet uncompromising, he juggled hall bookings, fixtures and the occasional flare‑up, keeping everyone on the same page.

The process proved a simple truth: articulate a clear vision, and people will run to make it reality.

Five captains stood shoulder‑to‑shoulder with him each week:

  • Mohammad Haroon – Six Shotterz
  • Saad Bashir – Greenz XI
  • Adnan Mohammed – Molvi Sixers
  • Waqar Arshad – Hit & Run
  • Kazam Hussain – Jattaaas Six

Their punctuality, fee‑collecting and talent‑spotting kept the league smooth and spirited.

"Honestly, I’m so proud of the lads. No one expected us to pull this off. on paper, they had the big names, the superstars, but we had heart and we had trust in each other. Every single player gave everything tonight. This win isn’t just for us — it’s for everyone who’s come together to make this league happen It’s amazing to see so many people from our community come together for the love of the game. I hope this is just the start..."
